Poder-con o sinergía no es algo que se pueda poseer, es un proceso en el que uno participa. La eficacia es transaccional. Toma el ejemplo de una neurona en su red neural. Si hipotéticamente hablando, la neurona supone que sus poderes fuesen una propiedad personal a ser preservada y protegida de otras células nerviosas, y se aísla detrás de muros fronterizos defensivos, se atrofiaría o moriría. Su salud y poder residen en su capacidad de apertura y de dejar pasar las señales eléctricas a través de sí misma. Sólo así el sistema más grande del que forma parte comienza a responder y pensar.
El funcionamiento del cuerpo político es muy parecido a una red neural. Como el cerebro, la sociedad es un sistema cibernético que funciona bien sólo con flujos de información libres. Así es como opera nuestra mente-cuerpo. Cuando ponemos nuestra mano en el fuego, rápidamente la retiramos porque la retroalimentación nos informa que nuestros dedos se están quemando. No lo sabríamos si comenzáramos a censurar la información de nuestro cuerpo.
La autogobernancia requiere la libre circulación de información necesaria para la toma de decisiones públicas. En la presente fase hiperatrofiada de la Sociedad de Crecimiento Industrial, inclusive los gobiernos que se hacen llamar democracias suprimen la información que no beneficia los intereses corporativos. Nos hemos acostumbrado a la desinformación y mentiras acerca de muchos arreglos de peligros, como la relación entre el cáncer y otras enfermedades con la radioactividad, comida transgénica y otros productos de limpieza personal y para los hogares. […] Este silencio institucionalizado es entendible en términos de protección de intereses pero viene con un precio muy alto. Cualquier sistema que constantemente suprime la retroalimentación y bloquea su percepción al resultado de su comportamiento, es suicida.
El concepto de poder-con nos invita a ser más empáticos y monitorear nuestra
respuesta a las necesidades auto-organizantes del sistema más grande. Es nuestra
responsabilidad sistemática dar a la sociedad y desbloquear la retroalimentación que haya sido previamente suprimida. Esto es esencial para el Gran Giro de la Sociedad de
Crecimiento Industrial a una Sociedad que Sustenta la Vida. Muchas de sus heroínas y héroes desconocid@s son mujeres y hombres que, poniéndose en considerable riesgo personal, descubren, ponen a la luz y comparten información importante que ha sido ocultada de la vista de la gente.
Nuestra interexistencia con la red de la vida no significa que debamos tolerar
comportamientos destructivos. Por el contrario, significa que debemos intervenir
cuando nuestra salud y sobrevivencia colectiva estén en peligro. Esto puede involucrar
el apoyo en favor de nuevas leyes o intervenir de manera más directa y noviolentamente
para remover autoridad de aquellos que abusan de ella. Esto no es una lucha por el
poder, es su liberación para un uso eficiente y autogobernante. Así actuamos no sólo para nuestro beneficio o el de nuestro grupo o partido, sino también para el beneficio de otras “neuronas de la red” y somos sostenidos por el gran número de recursos de la red, que incluyen nuestras diferencias y diversidades.

Power-with or synergy is not a property one can own, but a process one engages in. Efficacy is transactional. Take the neuron in the neural net. If it were, hypothetically, to suppose that its powers were a personal property to be preserved and protected from other nerve cells, and isolated itself behind defensive walls, it would atrophy, or die. Its health and its power lie in opening itself to the charge, letting the signals through. Only then can the larger systems of which it is a part learn to respond and think.
The body-politic is much like a neural net. Like the brain, society is a cybernetic system which only functions well with unhampered flows of information. That is how our mind-bodies work. When you put your hand on a hot stove, you rapidly withdraw it, because feedback tells you your fingers are burning. You wouldn’t know that if you began censoring your body’s reports.
Self-governance requires the free circulation of information necessary to public decision-making. In the present hypertrophied stage of the Industrial Growth Society, however, even governments that call themselves democracies suppress information unwelcome to corporate interests. We learn daily of high-level cover-ups, a scientific panel’s find-ings officially rejected, a report censored. We have become accustomed to misinformation and deception about an enormous array of dangers, such as the relationship of cancer and other diseases to radioactivity, food additives, or household products. […] This institutionalized secrecy is understandable in terms of protecting vested interests, but it comes at a high price. For any system that consistently suppresses feedback–closing its perceptions to the results of its behavior–is suicidal.
While the concept of power-with summons us to develop empathy, it also calls for vigilance and assertiveness in responding to the self-organizing needs of the larger system. It is our systemic responsibility to give feedback to our body politic, and unblock that feedback which has been suppressed. This is essential to the Great Turning from the Industrial Growth Society to a Life Sustaining Society. Many of its unsung heroes are women and men who, often at considerable personal risk, unearth and disclose important information held from the public.
Our interexistence with others in the web of life does not mean that we should tolerate destructive behavior. On the contrary, it means we should step in when our collective health and survival are at stake. That can involve lobbying for laws, or intervening in a more direct fashion, nonviolently, to remove authority from those who misuse it. This is not a struggle to “seize” power so much as to release it for efficient self-governance. Thus we act, not only for ourselves and our own group or party, but also on behalf of all the other “neurons in the net.” Then we are sustained by the myriad resources of that net, which include all our differences and diversities.
